Newest Drug – the battle with Lyme disease continues…
Newest Drug: Disulfiram. Yes, you know I’m a Lyme disease guinea pig! If you or a loved one is fighting chronic Lyme, you know it’s a never ending battle.
I’ve not done a good job keeping the Lyme Files up-to-date, and am trying to change that. But it’s not easy keeping promises and getting things done when you have chronic Lyme disease.
The good news is, I haven’t been on antibiotics for over two years and haven’t crashed. Prior to the injections I was on in the last round of antibiotics, I would start to crash within two weeks of going off them.
But nothing we have tried has been able to reboot my immune system. I get everything that’s going around. I’ve had a cold or flu continually since early November, 2018. I just can’t get well.
I am told that this is what chronic Lyme disease does: It compromises my immune system.
Before Lyme, I had a great immune system! I almost never missed work. I could go for years without missing a day. But after this monster got me, I can’t get well.
This newest drug, disulfiram, is primarily used to fight alcoholism. I am told that if you drink alcohol while taking it, you will get violently ill. But it doesn’t matter, because I don’t drink, anyway. Which is a good thing.
After years of being a guinea pig and taking who knows how many different meds, imagine what alcohol would do!
Anyway, it turns out there is a thing called, persistor cells. As I understand it, these are antibiotic-resistant bacteria that don’t get eliminated by all those other drugs. The weird things is, they don’t seem to go all out like before, because I haven’t crashed. But they can make a real mess of the immune system.
So… here I am. One more day to go. I feel lousy. Is it a herx from this newest drug? Or is it the Lyme disease. I guess we’ll have to see.
What about you? Leave us a comment, okay?
See you next time.
